Born from a German Garage, Perfected in Taiwan
In 1992, engineering students Markus Riese and Heiko Müller designed a folding bicycle that would refuse to make the common compromises of small-wheeled bikes: sloppy steering, flex in the middle of the frame, and uncomfortable jarring over rough tarmac.
Their prototype won the prestigious Hesse Innovation Prize in 1993. Recognizing the revolutionary potential, George Lin, founder of Pacific Cycles in Taiwan, partnered with them to produce the world's most rigid, high-performance foldable bike: the Birdy.
Evolution of the Birdy Frame
Classic Round Tube
Iconic tubular aluminium frame. Now celebrated in the revived Birdy New Classic line for purists who love vintage aesthetics.
Monocoque Robotic Weld
Introduced robotic seam welding of two hydroformed half-shells, increasing torsional rigidity by over 30% while reducing overall weight.
Hydroformed Monocoque
Redesigned geometry with internal cable routing, 10.5-degree fork rake, and 15% more compact folded volume, setting today's benchmark.
